The week surrounding the Girl Scout Birthday is Girl Scout week. During this week I will be giving your Brownie a calendar of activities to complete at home. If she completes at least 4 she will earn a Girl Scout Week patch. Also, that Sunday, 15 March, is Girl Scout Sunday. If your Brownie wears her uniform to the service of your choice there is a patch available for that as well. Just let me know.

Finally, in my research, I discovered 2 Try Its that would be very easy for your Brownie to earn at home if you have internet access. They are Computer Smarts and Point, Click and Go. I have attached the requirements to this letter. Your daughter needs to complete 4 of the activities to earn the Try It. Please let me know by our campout on 2 May if she does so I have time to order the patches.

I know this is a lot of information all at once. We just have a lot going on and I want to keep you as up to date as possible. Of course, we will have cookie booth sales in there somewhere too and I will let you know when as soon as I know.

Thank you for all your support and as always, if you have any questions just ask!

Thinking Day

Thinking Day is this Saturday (21 Feb) at the Soldiers' Theater from 1500-1700. We invite all the parents/families to attend with your Brownie. As you know our troop has decided to share information about Egypt. This week at our meeting we will be finalizing our displays, learning a game we are going to share for our demonstration, and creating costumes. The help I need from parents involves 3 things.
1. Please have your Brownie wear a white T-shirt (and course her vest or sash) to the Thinking Day ceremony. This will be a part of our costume.
2. If you have anything at all pertaining to Egypt, we would love to be able to use it in our display. Please have your Brownie bring it to our meeting this week if she hasn't already.
3. I'm going to include a couple of sites that have Egyptian food. Please pick something from there--or anywhere--to make for a sample in our display. There are 75 Girl Scouts and we just need items for tastes--not meals.

Feb Updates

Brownie Parents,

So much to tell you--where to begin…

1) We still don’t have word about the cookie dates. As soon as I know something I will let you know. Keep taking those pre-orders.

2) You girls have some badges today that they have earned up until now. We are working on some new ones--busy as always.

3) Thinking Day is coming up on 21 Feb. from 3-5 in the Soldiers’ Theater. More information will follow, but just to give you a head’s up--Thinking Day is a day where scouts around the world come together and learn about each other. Each troop has chosen a country and will be doing a presentation for all the other troops and families. Our troop has chosen Egypt. So far we have found out some interesting things such as what the flag looks like and how to write our names in hieroglyphics. We are going to be continuing to learn/do more with this is the coming weeks. If you have anything--books, souvenirs, other items from Egypt- we would love to see them and borrow them for out display on Thinking Day if possible. Please let me know.

4) In the process of Thinking Day we are going to be learning about other places in the world as well to earn 2 Try-Its--Around the World--and--People of the World. I have a “homework” assignment for your daughter to complete to help with this. We are going to make a “Troop Recipe Book”. Here is the requirement straight from the Try-It handbook

“Some foods you like to eat may come from other countries. Have you ever had noodles, tortillas, egg rolls, peanut butter, or quiche? Where did they come from? May food also were first eaten here. Did you know that American Indians were the first to grow corn, which they called maize? ;You can find out more information like this by making a “Troop Recipe Book.” Bring in family recipes. Each girl can share information about her recipe. Where is it from ? Who gave it to her? How do you make it? Put recipes together in a book. Why not try them for a special lunch or supper?”

Please try to have your recipe at the next meeting.

I guess that’s all for now. I will get you more information about cookies and Thinking Day as soon as I have it.
Thanks for lending me your daughter…
Laurie

Updates

The girls decided last week that they would like to learn about Egypt for Thinking Day. I'm really excited about this because there is a lot we can do with it. Today we are going to be making mosaics from beans. This is the first requirement in the Try-It Around the World. We will also be making a posterboard size Egyptian flag for our Thinking Day display. This will take care of our first requirement for the Try-It People of the World. As we learn more about Egypt and then more about the world following Thinking Day we will finish the two above listed Try-Its.

For Thinking Day, I will be asking the girls (and their parents) to help us with our display and the food we will need to prepare. If you have any wonderful items or ideas, please let me know. I will be doing more research as the weeks go on and will be letting you know of resources I have found. This should be a really fun/interesting project.

WOW!! Long time no post!

Sorry about not posting over the holiday season--it was crazy in our household-as I'm sure you can understand.
We are now starting our new year of scouting. We are going to be busy, busy, busy as usual.

This afternoon at our meeting we are going to be going over all the "rules" and do's and don'ts of cookie sales. We do not know exactly when the cookies are going to get here, but we do know they are on the way and we want to be prepared. Your Brownie will be receiving a pre-order sheet to take orders on up until the cookies arrive. At that point, you will deliver the cookies and collect the money for your daughter's personal orders. We will then have 2 days of selling cookies outside the PX and Commissary. I will have a sign up sheet with times once we know the dates for sure. The money from pre-orders stays with our troop only--money from the booth sales will be split equally among all troops based on hours of selling time.

We will also finally be finishing up our Eat Right, Stay Healthy Try-It. It seems as that has kept getting pushed to the wayside, but today is the day:)

Coming up in February is Thinking Day. This is a day when Girl Scouts all around the world participate in activites to learn about other cultures. Our troop will be participating in a ceremony by choosing a country and doing some research and projects on it and presenting it at the ceremony in Feb. This afternoon we are going to brainstorm and hopefully come up with our country so we can begin putting everything together beginning next week.

Please watch for notes coming home today with all the information about cookie sales. They are VERY important!!! If you have any questions AT ALL, don't hesitate to ask.
